Gardening Guider is a free gardening platform built around one idea: a plant cannot tell you what it needs, so the least we can do is make it easy for you to find out. It brings together 1,800+ researched growing guides, a 42,000+ species reference database and 15 free gardening tools — written for growers everywhere, from a sunny backyard in the United States to a monsoon-soaked terrace in India.
Why this site exists
Every living thing needs somebody to notice it.
I am fortunate. When something is wrong with me, there are people who listen — family, friends, colleagues. A plant has no such luxury. It cannot say that it is thirsty, that its roots are sitting in water, that the corner it was placed in never sees the sun. It cannot ask for help even once. It simply waits. And if nobody notices in time, it dies quietly, without complaint.
That thought is the entire reason this website exists. To me a plant is not decoration and not furniture — it is a life, running on the same clock as mine. It just happens to be a life that gives before it asks: shade, food, medicine, and the oxygen in the breath you are taking while you read this sentence.
I am not a botanist, and I will never pretend to be one. I am a technologist. So I built what I actually know how to build — the thing that listens on the plant’s behalf. Every guide, every calculator and every reminder on this site is one small attempt to close the gap between a plant that cannot speak and a person who genuinely wants to get it right.
If this site helps even a few thousand plants survive their first year, it will have been worth building. Consider it a small thank-you note to a family that has been quietly keeping us alive for a very long time.
Who runs Gardening Guider
My name is Gaurav Pandey — legally Gaurav Kumar Pandey, the name you will see on this site’s legal pages. I am an information technology professional, and Gardening Guider is where my profession and my hobby finally met.
My working life is spent in systems and software. My areas of practice include:

Gardening Guider is not an outsourced content farm. The platform, the plant database, the 15 tools, the search, the member area and the performance work behind them are all built and maintained in-house — by me. If a page here loads fast, ranks well or answers your question on the first try, that is deliberate engineering, not luck.

Our honesty rule: we will never show you an invented team member, a stock-photo “expert” or a review that did not happen. When a role above is filled by a real person, their real name and background will appear here — not before.
How our content is made — our editorial policy
Gardening advice is easy to write badly. Wrong information does not just waste your weekend — it kills a living thing and costs you money. So we hold every guide to the same rules:
- Researched before it is written. Each guide is checked against university extension services, botanical references and the reported experience of real growers — not rewritten from whichever blog happens to rank first.
- We never invent experience. Nobody here claims to have personally grown every plant covered on this site. Where the knowledge comes from other growers or published trials, we say so and we link to them.
- Cross-checked, not copied. If a popular website publishes a figure we cannot verify, we do not repeat it. Where credible sources genuinely disagree, we tell you who says what.
- Written for two climates. Most gardening advice online silently assumes a temperate Western garden. We give timings for US/global conditions and for Indian heat, humidity, monsoon and container growing.
- Honest recommendations. When we suggest a tool or a seed supplier, it is because we believe it earns its place. Affiliate links are clearly disclosed and never change what we recommend.
- Health information stays careful. Traditional and culinary uses are described as exactly that. Nothing here is medical advice — please talk to a professional.

Every guide, every calculator and planner, the plant database and the community forum are free to use — no sign-up, no paywall — and that will not change. The one exception is clearly marked: heavier use of the AI Plant Doctor beyond its free daily allowance is part of our paid plans, and that is what keeps everything else free.
A thank-you we owe
Gardening Guider did not begin alone. In its earliest days — when it was still an idea with no readers, no tools and no name worth mentioning — Akanksha Anand gave this project her time, her encouragement and her belief that it was worth doing at all. A great deal of what this site became rests on that beginning.
She is no longer part of the project, and I would be dishonest if I said that was easy. Some things you carry forward on behalf of the people who helped you start them. This is one of them. Whatever this site grows into, its first roots were planted with her help, and that is written into it permanently.

Accessibility
Gardening advice is no use to you if you cannot read it. This site is built to meet WCAG 2.2 level AA: text sits at 16px or larger with generous line spacing, colours are checked for contrast rather than guessed at, every image carries a description, forms have real labels, and everything can be reached and operated with a keyboard alone. Buttons and links are sized so a thumb can hit them, and the layout reflows down to a narrow phone without you having to scroll sideways.
I test these things, but I am one person and I will have missed some. If a page, a tool or a form does not work with your screen reader, your keyboard, your zoom level or your browser’s text settings, that is a fault worth fixing — please tell me what happened and I will fix it and reply to you. If something is blocking you right now, say so and I will send you the same answer in plain text or read it out in an e-mail.

Questions, corrections and disagreements are all welcome — especially corrections. If you spot something on this site that is wrong, please tell me and I will fix it and credit you. That is how a reference is supposed to work.

How Gardening Guider is funded
Independence is easy to claim and harder to explain, so here is the money side in plain terms.
The site earns from advertising on article pages and from affiliate commissions when a reader buys through a marked link. A small number of readers pay for the two AI features — photo disease diagnosis and the written Plant Doctor chat — because an outside service bills us for every scan and every answer.
What the money does not do is decide what we recommend. A supplier cannot pay to appear in a guide, and no brand sees an article before it is published.
All but one of the free tools have no paid tier at all. The pricing page sets out exactly what costs anything and why, and the affiliate disclosure covers the commercial links.
Where our facts come from, and how mistakes get fixed
The sources we lean on
Growing advice is only as good as what sits behind it. Ours leans on university cooperative extension services, national botanical institutions, and published trial data rather than on whichever blog currently ranks first.
Toxicity claims are a special case, because getting them wrong can hurt an animal. Those are checked against the ASPCA’s own listings, and we do not extend a claim from one species to a whole genus just because it would read more neatly.
When we get something wrong
We do get things wrong. Roughly forty guides were corrected in a single audit round this year, including a toxicity claim that had been stated more confidently than the source supported.
That is the point of publishing corrections rather than quietly editing. If you spot an error, the contact page reaches a real person, and factual corrections get priority over everything else in the queue.
