What these free gardening tools actually do

These are free gardening tools that answer one specific question each. No sign-up, no trial, no card. You open the tool, put in your own numbers, and get an answer you can act on today.

Trowel, hand fork, rake and snips laid out on a workbench, the jobs these free gardening tools plan for
Every tool here answers one question, the way each of these does one job.

Most gardening sites stop at advice. Advice is generic by nature. “Space tomatoes properly” helps nobody standing in a 4 ft bed with 11 seedlings and no idea what to do next.

So each tool here takes the general rule and applies it to your situation. Your bed size. Your city. Your fertiliser bag. Your frost dates.

Roughly half are garden calculators that turn a measurement into a number you can buy or plant against. The rest are plant care tools: identification, diagnosis, planning and record-keeping.

Every tool runs in your browser or on our server. Nothing is sold, and no answer is held back behind an upgrade. These are online garden tools in the plainest sense, with nothing to install.

Which tool should you use?

Pick by the question in your head, not by category. This table maps the common ones.

Your question Tool What you get back

When do I sow? Planting Calendar Exact date ranges for your city, both hemispheres

How much fertiliser? Fertilizer Calculator Dose for your own N-P-K bag, plus an organic option

What did I grow here last year? Rotation Planner Four-year path per bed, with disease warnings
How do I lay out the bed? Garden Planner Drag-and-drop plan, scored 0 to 100
When do I start seeds indoors? Seed Starting Sow, transplant and harvest dates for 101 crops
Is it worth growing? Yield Calculator Expected kg and the money it replaces
How do I keep track of it all? My Garden Journal, harvest log and weather-aware reminders

Not sure where to start? The What to Grow quiz asks a few questions and hands you a shortlist.

Where the numbers come from

A calculator is only as honest as its inputs. So here is what sits behind these free gardening tools.

  • Frost and weather. Fifteen years of daily records via Open-Meteo, read as percentiles. You get a 90%, 50% and 10% risk date, not one date pretending to be certain.
  • Frost thresholds. Light, moderate and hard frost at 32°F, 28°F and 24°F, the standard National Weather Service bands.
  • Plant data. A 42,000-species database carrying sun, water, hardiness, toxicity and root depth, which is what lets the soil and water tools auto-fill instead of asking you.
  • Identification. Pl@ntNet, a scientific consortium including CIRAD, INRAE, IRD and Inria.
  • Companion pairings. Each pairing is labelled either research-backed or traditional. We do not dress up folklore as science.

Where sources disagree, the tool says so. That is more useful than a confident wrong number.

Built for the whole world, not one country

Most garden calculators quietly assume North America. Enter a city in Chennai or Christchurch and they break, or worse, they answer as if it were Ohio.

These tools take any city worldwide. The calendar flips for the southern hemisphere. Rainfall logic includes a monsoon mode that skips watering after 25 mm and warns about drainage instead.

Indian growers get the Kharif, Rabi and Zaid seasons, plus crops such as okra, brinjal, methi, karela and lauki that Western tools simply do not list.

Units switch between metric and imperial everywhere. Feet or metres, gallons or litres, kilograms or pounds.

What stays free, and what does not

Honesty is cheaper than a surprise. Every tool on this page is free to use and always will be, and all but one are free without any limit, because they cost us nothing to run once built.

Two things do carry a real per-use cost, because an outside AI service charges us every time you use them. Photo-based disease diagnosis in Plant Doctor gives you seven free scans, then a small monthly allowance, then credits. The written Plant Doctor chat gives you a set number of free questions every day, more with a free account, and paid plans only if you want a bigger allowance or a stronger answer.

The symptom-picker side of Plant Doctor stays free and unlimited, as does every calculator and every planner. Photo plant identification is free too, with a daily cap — one ID a day as a guest, three with a free account — because it also runs on a paid outside service.

Full detail sits on the pricing page, including what a Pro plan does and does not change.

How the tools work together

They are designed as one chain, not a pile of separate islands. A normal season runs roughly like this.

  1. Find your frost dates, so every later date has something real to hang on.
  2. Run the seed-starting calculator to get indoor sowing and transplant dates.
  3. Lay the bed out in the garden planner, then check pairings in the companion checker.
  4. Size soil and fertiliser for that exact bed.
  5. Log it in My Garden and let the weather-aware reminders handle watering.
  6. Next winter, the rotation planner remembers what grew where.

Your city is shared between the location tools, so you enter it once. Bed plans and saved plants carry across too.

If you would rather read first, the topics index lists every growing guide on the site.
