How much water does a vegetable garden need?
A water calculator answers two questions at once: how much water do plants need this week, and how often to water a vegetable garden in your climate. This garden water calculator is also an irrigation calculator — it turns the weekly total into drip run-minutes, hose minutes or watering cans, and subtracts the rain you have already had. Sowing dates come from the planting calendar.

The classic answer is “about 25 mm (1 inch) of water per week” — which works out to 25 litres per square metre, or roughly 0.62 US gallons per square foot. That inch is a fine starting point in a temperate summer, but the honest answer moves with four things the calculator above accounts for: your climate (a hot, dry week can double demand; a cool one halves it), the crop (cucumbers drink ~30% more than garlic), your soil (sandy soil needs smaller, more frequent drinks; clay wants deep, infrequent soaking), and free water from the sky — enter this week’s rain and it is subtracted automatically, because rain you already got is irrigation you do not need to add.
Just as important as how much is how deep. Shallow daily sprinkles grow shallow, drought-fragile roots. The goal is to deliver the week’s water in 2–5 sessions (the calculator picks the count from your soil type) so moisture reaches 15–20 cm (6–8 in) down, where vegetable roots actually live. Water in early morning: less evaporation than midday, and leaves dry before evening, which keeps fungal disease down.

Step 1 — climate baseline: each climate option carries a typical weekly evapotranspiration-driven demand: cool/mild 15, temperate 25, tropical/humid 30, hot & dry 40 litres per m² per week. These are simplified from reference evapotranspiration (ET₀) figures used in irrigation science.
Step 2 — crop factor: demand is multiplied by a crop coefficient (Kc-style): thirsty cucurbits 1.15–1.2, most veg ~1.0, garlic and wheat ~0.9, established fruit trees ~0.8.
Step 3 — adjustments: mulched beds × 0.75 (a mulch layer cuts surface evaporation by a quarter or more). Then rainfall is subtracted at face value: 1 mm of rain on 1 m² = 1 litre (1 inch over 100 sq ft ≈ 62 gallons). Net = need − rain, never below zero.
Step 4 — run time: litres per session ÷ your system’s flow. Drip: emitters × 2 or 4 L/h. Hose: litres ÷ L/min (default 10 L/min ≈ 2.6 gal/min — time how long your hose takes to fill a 10 L bucket to get your true figure). On clay, long run times are auto-split into cycle-and-soak so water infiltrates instead of running off.
Need = 25 × 1.15 × 5 = 144 L; mulch ×0.75 → 108 L; rain credit 10 mm × 5 m² = 50 L; net ≈ 58 L (15 gal) for the week. Loam → 3 sessions of ~19 L. Through ten 2 L/h drip emitters that is 19 ÷ 20 × 60 ≈ 58 minutes per session; with a 10 L/min hose, about 2 minutes per session.

Young transplants are the exception to every table: for the first 2–3 weeks they need small, near-daily drinks while roots establish, whatever the crop factor says.

Drip minutes, hose minutes and watering cans
“58 litres” is only useful once it becomes “minutes of tap-open time” — that is what the run-time card above computes. The reference numbers: standard drip emitters deliver 2 or 4 L/h each (0.5 / 1 GPH), an unrestricted garden hose runs ~10–15 L/min (2.6–4 gal/min) and far more at full blast, and a typical watering can holds 8–10 L (2–2.5 gal) — so a 19 L session is simply two full cans, which is how most of the world’s gardeners actually measure water.
Drip is the efficiency king (90%+ of water reaches the root zone, versus ~65–75% for sprinklers on a breezy day) and the only method that scales calmly: ten emitters running an hour uses less water than five minutes of open hose, delivered exactly where roots are.
Two habits beat any formula: push a finger (or a screwdriver) 5 cm into the soil before watering — if it comes up damp, wait; and watch the plants at dusk, not noon (midday wilt in cucurbits is normal shade behaviour, evening wilt means real thirst).
How many gallons per square foot does a garden need?
Quick answer: a vegetable garden needs about 0.6 gallons of water per square foot per week, and a flower bed about 0.5 gal/sq ft/week — the same thing as the classic 1–1.5 inches of water per week, rain included. In depth terms, 1 inch of water over any area is 0.62 gallons per square foot (25 mm = 25 litres per m²). Pots follow their own rules: the material matters as much as the size. Unglazed terracotta breathes and dries roughly 25% faster than plastic or glazed ceramic, and fabric grow bags dry fastest of all because they wick and air-prune from every surface. The container mode above has a pot-material setting for exactly this, and the houseplant rule stays constant across all of them: water thoroughly when the top 2 inches (5 cm) of mix is dry, never on a fixed calendar.
Live watering by real local climate — and a drip system sized to match
Generic climate presets are honest but blunt — a “temperate” week in Manchester and one in Madrid are not the same week. That is why the calculator has a live climate option: type your city (or a US ZIP) and it fetches your location’s actual reference evapotranspiration (ET₀) for the past 7 days plus the 7-day forecast from the free Open-Meteo weather model, and uses that real figure — millimetres of water your local sun, wind, heat and humidity actually pulled out of the ground — in place of the table estimate. The result panel always states which mode it used, and if the lookup fails it simply falls back to the climate table. To our knowledge no other garden water calculator does this.
The drip-system designer below the results closes the loop for irrigation planning: give it your plant count and it returns the emitter count (1 per small plant, 2 for large or thirsty ones), the run time in minutes that delivers exactly the weekly target above through your chosen emitter flow (1 GPH is the common default), a tubing-length estimate (total row length plus 10% for turns), and — if you enter your tap’s supply flow — whether the system must be split into zones. If you type in your own per-emitter and per-metre tubing prices, it also totals the parts cost from your figures.
India and monsoon watering notes
Indian kitchen gardens live in three water seasons, and the calculator’s options map to them. Summer (March–June): use the hot & dry climate setting, mulch everything — a 5–7 cm straw or dry-leaf mulch is the difference between watering daily and every third day — and water at dawn before the heat.
Monsoon (June–September): enter the week’s rainfall and the tool will usually tell you to skip irrigation entirely; the real risks flip to waterlogging and fungal disease, so clear drainage holes, pull mulch back from stems, and stake plants against wind-loosened wet soil. Winter/rabi (October–February): the temperate setting fits most of the plains; water mid-morning so beds are not cold and wet overnight. Terrace and balcony growers should favour drip kits or bottle-drip on containers — municipal supply hours make timed, low-flow watering more practical than hose sessions.
